Dr. Dong is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Investigator of the Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases of Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Dong serves as reviewers for a number of journals including Nature Medicine, Nature Communications, Cell Metabolism, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Diabetes, etc.
Dr. Dong’s research focuses on the pathogenesis of diabetes and obesity and related complications including fatty liver disease. Specifically, his laboratory investigates the pathophysiological functions of forkhead box O transcription factors (Foxos), NAD+-dependent deacetylases (Sirtuins), and anti-oxidative stress genes (Sestrins) using cellular and animal model systems. His group is among the first to discover the link from the insulin signaling pathway to the NAD biogenesis and regulation. Recently, his research has demonstrated a novel role of Sesn3 in the regulation of mTOR signaling and insulin sensitivity. In addition, his lab has uncovered a novel function of Sirt6 in the regulation of glucose-stimulated insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells. His work has been published in the top-tier journals in the metabolic field, including Cell Metabolism, Diabetes, Diabetologia, Journal of Lipid Research, Molecular Metabolism, Journal of Biological Chemistry, and Journal of Hepatology, and others
